I'm gonna be honest, McAlpine. I was concerned about where you were taking this whole thing.

Actually, I was mostly just concerned that you were going to disparage Buckley's version of Hallelujah. I'm glad you didn't, we would've been at odds...basically forever.

Great article, very well written, nice read. I agree with what I read as the basic premise: that good music is immune to dilution no matter how many good, mediocre or terrible artists cover it and how much it saturates TV and Radio.

I don't necessarily agree with your assessment of motive in all cases. I think you are cynical, and your version is probably true often, but perhaps not as often as you think. Then again, I'm not a musician so my ideas are less about the musician's process and more about human nature.

I would hope, though, that when a group decides to cover a song it's because they're passionate about that artist and that song, not because they're trying to establish themselves as being equivalent.

Actually, the more I think about it the more I buy into your cynicism. You're probably right.

Great article :)

You hit the nail on the head sir! Although I do think Hendrix was a master of musical cannibalism...he's done some of the only covers I enjoy. Everyone else needs to get off the bus or learn how to write for themselves! We as a society have let this happen, and its no wonder that our music industry has turned into a huge circus that tries to force all attention away from musicianship and originality.
