Great post! Mississippi John Hurt is my favorite bluesman and even though people are still discovering him, I think he's underrated. I recently posted about him too, if you'd like to check it out. http://rubylee1776.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/wheres-the-magic-in-modern-music

Glad to see there are some kindred spirits out there!

Thanks for the reply Nicci! I didn't discover Mississippi John until very very recently, although I have heard about him off and on the last couple of years. I first heard about him through Peter Case, who came and did a concert at my school about 3 years ago. I need to check out John Fahey, and I recommend Peter to you! His playing is very similar.

I discovered Mississippi John Hurt in 1979 when I couldn't find a blues album my boyfriend had asked me to pick up from the record library. Not sure if it was the cover, his name. the sleevenotes or the fact it had a version of Stackolee on it but I picked up a Mississippi John Hurt 'best of' instead. When the needle hit the grove, I fell in love. I was (and still am) a big fan of John Fahey and instantly recognised the huge influence MJH had on him..but maybe more than that, he had the sweetest, most vulnerable voice and beautiful phrasing. the 'lost years' are a crying shame but at least he got the recognition he deserved before passing.
